I have no problem recommending this mic to anyone starting out, if they realize the limitations I’ve mentioned, first. I feel like I have to pull more out of it in post to get it to sound good, but overall it is a great mic especially for the price.

I’ve used it off and on for years and it is unforgiving as far as outside noise getting in. If you go with this mic, having a killer sounding dead space will make this mic shine.
#BEST VOICE ACTING PROFESSIONAL#
Is it good enough to do professional VO jobs? Will it be a great mic to practice with, and get your toes in the voice over water? Yes! Will it compete with high end mics like the Sennheiser 416 or Neumann TLM-103? Probably not. This is probably the best XLR voiceover mic you can get in this price range (only $100!) It can sound surprisingly good, especially if you learn to EQ it, and have a quiet, well-treated room. You’ll have to deal with some annoying features that higher end models don’t have, but hey, it’s more affordable, right? #BEST VOICE ACTING UPGRADE#
So if you go with the beginner voice over set up, know that you’re still getting technology that is very advanced, and it won’t hold you back (until it does.) And when it does, you should have raised the money needed to upgrade to the medium and high budget options in this article.Įnough yapping, let’s get to the best voice over studio setups! Best beginner voice over studio setup (low budget)Ī perfect voice acting setup if you’re on a really low budget. Microphones, audio interfaces, computers have all become improved technology at an affordable price over time. The truth is that getting into this business, even with the high budget items, is cheaper than it ever has been. There’s no shame in starting out with cheaper gear. That said, if you’ll go broke, go with cheaper gear (to start) It’s paid for itself many times since, so it was a good investment for me. I knew that any client would not bat an eye when I told them what gear I was using. I knew that if I bought this pro-level mic, it would make me take it more seriously. ( I’m no trust fund kid, either.) I knew I was going to take voice acting seriously. When I was starting out, I bought a Sennheiser MKH416. Now you may be thinking, “but I don’t have $1000 to spend right now”, and if that’s truly the case, and you’re burning to get started in voice over, go with the less expensive gear.īut there may be more value (and financial wisdom) in waiting until you’ve saved up the $1000 to get the mic that will last you forever.Īnother important thing to consider is that if you want to make money doing voice over, you’ll have an easier time competing for jobs if you have pro-level equipment from the get-go. If you had bought the $1000 mic to begin with, you’d save $700. Think about it this way: If you buy a $200 mic to start out, then a $500 mid-range mic a year or later, then finally an industry standard mic for $1000 or more, how much money have you spent? $1700. There’s a saying that goes, “Buy it nice, or buy it twice”, and in my experience, (especially for high end gear that’s built to last), this holds up. The problem with that is that it can actually be more expensive in the long run. A lot of people start out and look for the absolute cheapest equipment possible. If you’re just starting out, but you know you want to take voice over seriously, a little investment will go a long way.
